Do you struggle to pick a bottle of wine at the supermarket?
Picking a wine at a supermarket can be overwhelming but if you use these three simple rules, you’ll look like a pro in no time!
Do judge a book by its cover!
Yes you heard me right, you can pick a wine on the label, but make sure you’re reading it. Here are the things to look out for…
1. A grape variety or region.
Wines that come from a specific, protected region tend to be a higher quality than those that just state grape variety. Don’t get me wrong, knowing what grape variety you like is an excellent place to start. These wines make great weekday bottles, but if you’re looking for that special occasion wine, look out for regions.
2. The style of the bottle.
If you like traditional wine, look for a traditional looking bottle. If you want to explore, look for something modern and funky, it really can be that simple. The more you look into it, you’ll find that even the shape of the bottle can indicate the style or region of a wine e.g. If you see a tall skinny bottle, you’re probably going to get a beautifully aromatic white wine.
3. Where in the world has it come from?
The basic rule here is, the warmer the climate, the bigger and bolder the wine. From cooler climates you can expect fruitier, lighter wines. You might sometimes see a high alcohol wine from a cool climate…DO NOT TRUST THIS WINE! There will for sure be something out of balance with the flavour.
Please remember that these are general rules, there will always be exceptions to the rule, but follow these and you’ll see the difference in what you’re drinking.
Oh and I nearly forgot to mention, look for discounts! Most £15+ bottles of wine are safe bets in terms of quality (we’ll go more into this topic on another post), but out of budget. If you see them reduced then snap them up!
